APDS Personal Development Class

The goal of the Support Group for Personal Development is to enhance the participant’s awareness, insight, and behavior towards optimal health for themselves as an individual, family man, and their role as a member of a community.  APDS defines “optimal health” as does Dr. John T. Chissel in his book ‘Pyramids of Power!’  “Optimal health is the best possible emotional, intellectual, physical, spiritual and socio-economic aliveness that we can attain.”  The following subject matter will be covered but not limited to:

Customer

The target audience is males 18 years and older who want to become a more effective individual as it relates to their personal contributions to family and community development. The target community to be served under this investor target/target area/performance target is the immediate community that APDS is located in which includes the Driving Park and Near Eastside communities.  These boundaries are Alum Creek to the East, Fifth Ave to the North, Parsons Ave. to the West and Thurman Ave. to the South. The majority of the area is made up of a large percentage of low income, high unemployment and single parent, female headed, households.  The incidents of violence, drug and alcohol usage are above city norms. Alcohol outlets are the largest per capita in the city.  The gender of our clients maintains approximately 60% to 65% female for the children, 90% male for the young adults and 70% male for the adults and elders.  Ninety-eight percent of our clients are categorized as in need of financial assistance and only able to participate because of funding through the ADAMH Board of Franklin County.  Most of our participants are African American.  Our referrals come from parents, schools, court systems, Adult Parole Authority, Netcare, Franklin County Children Services, Ohio Department of Youth Services, Ohio Youth Advocacy Program, former customers, walk-ins, and others.

Customers will be engaged in the service delivery process and assessing service impact in several ways. This program is a support group and the leader’s role is to facilitate group member participation through discussion, role-playing, and evaluations (verbal and written).
