Council of Elders

Every 3rd Saturday, 3:00 - 5:00p.m.

E lders set the tone for standards, self-discipline, and behavior patterns the community follows. Elders understand that high moral standard, honesty, politeness, appropriate speech, a positive state of mind and truth must be strived for daily.  Elders set the example for all age groups through practicing the following:

• Constant learning
• Educating one-self through creativity
• Accepting responsibility with reverence
• Chimoranga (struggle) to find the universal truths
• Being discerning in knowing when something is correct and what is correct
• Accepting the responsibility of having visions which carry us through eternity
• Knowing that rituals are a spiritual process which are not for show
• Having the courage to assume responsibility for providing guidance for the village

Becoming a member of the APDS Council of Elders is a divine responsibility. It requires mastery of self and an acceptance of being a servant of the Creator through serving the family, collective, and community.

Minimum criteria for becoming a member of the APDS Council of Elders

• Be fifty-six years of age or older to enter the Elder status
• Be willing to display his/her own family as an example of good health as judged by members of the APDS Council of Elders
• Show evidence of having maintained the sacredness of the business and rituals of AROP standards
• Commitment to the continuing development of AROP
• Be committed to learn at least one African language
• Demonstrate skills in teaching, mediation, organizational work and/or economic development
