APDS AFRICENTRIC RITES OF PASSAGE
THE ELEMENTS OF AFRICENTRIC RITES OF PASSAGE ARE INCORPORATED INTO ALL APDS
PROGRAMS.
Africentric Rites of Passage (AROP) is a commonly agreed upon set of African-centered guidelines, in which each person must successfully master in order to be given the community sanctioned titles of African “Man” or “Woman.” The Africentric Rites of Passage is a process, which reinforces an African American person’s psyche with commitment to family, community, and nation: it stimulates inspiration and high achievement of full citizenship as a responsible and productive adult in the community.

Goals and Objectives
• To provide Africentric educational, physical and
spiritual development
• To provide experiences and tasks, which enable one to appreciate the
mastery required to move from one age grade stage of development to another.
• To adopt and incorporate the concept of commitment to family and community.
• To provide historical, cultural and life skills activities to increase
self-esteem.
• To develop mediation and negotiation skills.
