
APDS (Africentric Personal Development Shop, Inc.) is a 501 (C) 3, non-profit counseling institution which primary goal is to prevent, treat, and eliminate substance abuse and violence in Central Ohio.
- Founded in 1988 by Drs. Moriba and Barbara Kelsey in Columbus, Ohio.
- Provides a comprehensive range of culturally specific educational and social services to effectively:
- provide wellness programs, treatment and recovery services for individuals, families, organizations and communities through four departments:
- Imhotep Learning Institute
- Prevention & Intervention Services
- Substance Abuse Treatment & Recovery Department
- Administration Department
- promote the belief that healthy families are the foundation of a successful
community
- encourage Africentric development and lifestyles, which lead to optimal
health
- offer consultation, educational programs, cultural activities and community-wide events to strengthen communities
- APDS is primarily funded by citizens of Franklin County through the ADAMH Board of Franklin County. Additional funds are received through Medicaid, APDS “Mama Kim” Scholarship Fund, City of Columbus Health Department, City of Columbus Department of Public Safety, Black United Fund of Central Ohio, SBC, United Way Contributor’s Choice Program, individuals, and corporations.
- Most of our programs are offered at no charge to our participants. A subsidy scale is applied to some of our programs. Financial assistance is available to anyone who qualifies. APDS accepts most major insurances.
- APDS annual budget is $837,000 with 28 staff members (14 FTE, 5 part-timers, and 2 independent contractors – 7 seasonal employees for summer day camp)
