One of the many positive outcomes of the CAYND program is the creation of a community garden, located at 941 Carpenter Street, on the corner of Carpenter and Kossuth Streets. The once-vacant piece of land has been leased at no charge by the owner. The Garden of CAYNDness (pronounced “kindness”) not only adds beautification to the neighborhood, but it is also a food source, educational resource, and gathering place for neighbors. APDS relies on volunteers to maintain the garden. APDS staff members and family and friends, local residents, students from nearby Heyl Elementary School, parolees from ODRC and others have contributed to the garden’s success.
Recently the garden was awarded a grant from Scott’s Growing to Green to make improvements such as a fence, seating areas, additional plots and paths. Volunteers are needed and welcome to the garden anytime. The food that the garden produces will be given away to local residents. Those who contribute to the garden are welcome to share in the harvest. It is our hope that the Garden of CAYNDness will inspire residents to take pride in their neighborhood thereby reducing trash, crime and general neglect in the area. We also hope that people, especially children, will learn more about gardening and adopt a healthier lifestyle. If you would like to volunteer at the Garden of CAYNDness, please call today! Click the current events link for scheduled volunteer days and other activities at the garden.
