CAYND FAQ

1.  What is CAYND?

Collective Action for Youth and Neighborhood Development (CAYND) is a comprehensive anti-gang and anti-violence program that utilizes a 4-prong approach in order to revitalize our community, rectify and re-direct negative behavior, and reclaim our youth.

CAYND is a strategy identified by the Neighborhood Safety Working Group (NSWG) that was created by Mayor Michael B. Coleman and City Councilman Michael C. Mentel.  CAYND is a three-year demonstration/pilot model that is administrated by APDS.  More than thirty community service providers have committed to collaborate and form an Intervention Network to provide positive alternatives for youth who reside in a community bounded by Mooberry St., Whittier, Parsons Ave., and Rhoads Ave. CAYND will collectively coordinate and strategically implement a comprehensive network of intervention and prevention programs, focusing primarily on youth less than 22 years of age, to decrease criminal activity (particularly gang violence) in the targeted area.  Although our targeted population is less than 22 years of age, gang researchers and expert practitioners have documented the strong sphere of influence that older adult gang members have on the targeted population; therefore, CAYND will coordinate comprehensive reentry services to older ex-offenders returning to the targeted zone as another component of intervention that directly effects the initially agreed upon targeted population.

The 4-prong approach to community success includes: Law Enforcement, Municipal Services, Social Services and residents.
