
APDS OVERVIEW
- APDS is a 501 (C) 3, non-profit counseling institution founded in 1988 by Drs. Moriba and Barbara Kelsey in Columbus, Ohio. The institution’s primary goal is to prevent, treat, and eliminate substance abuse and violence in Franklin County.
- APDS is dually certified by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS) to operate both Non-Intensive and Intensive Outpatient Treatment and Prevention programs.
- APDS provides a comprehensive range of culturally respectful educational and social services to effectively:
- Provide wellness programs, treatment and recovery services for individuals, families, organizations and communities through five departments:
- APDS Imhotep Learning Institute (6 to 12 years old)
- Substance Abuse Outpatient Treatment & Recovery Department
- Prevention and Intervention Services
- Collective Action for Youth and Neighborhood Development
- Youth for the Future of Franklin County (16 to 21 years old)
- Promote the belief that healthy families are the foundation of a successful community
- Encourage Africentric development and lifestyles, which lead to optimal health
- Offer consultation, educational programs, cultural activities and community-wide events to strengthen communities
- APDS is primarily funded by citizens of Franklin County through the ADAMH Board of Franklin County. Additional funds are received through Medicaid, APDS “Mama Kim” Scholarship Fund, City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department, Community Shares of Mid-Ohio, United Way Contributor’s Choice Program, Central Ohio Workforce Investment Corporation (COWIC), individuals, and corporations.
- Most of the programs are offered at no charge to our participants. A subsidy scale is applied to some of our programs. Financial assistance is available to anyone who qualifies. APDS accepts most major insurances.
- APDS annual budget is over $1,000,000 with 24 staff members (16 FTE, 2 part-timers, and 2 independent contractors – 4 seasonal employees for summer day camp)
