AGENCY PROFILE
At the Africentric Personal Development Shop, Inc. (APDS), demonstrating excellence is our number one goal! Our focus on efficient operation and solid fiscal management has made APDS stronger than ever. During 20 years of service, we have delivered effective, high quality human services to residents of Franklin County and have been excellent stewards of both publicly and privately donated funds.
APDS is a 501(C) 3 non-profit social service institution that has 23 staff members and our annual operating budget has grown to just over one (1) million dollars. We are dually certified by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services (ODADAS) to operate both Non-Intensive and Intensive Outpatient Treatment and Prevention programs. Our services include assessments, individual and group counseling/education sessions for substance abuse and violence prevention and treatment programs. APDS offers personal development and anger management classes, supports the Council of Elders, and organizes various community development activities.
The APDS Imhotep Learning Institute (located in Hope Lutheran Church @ 820 Lilley Ave.) is an after school program and summer day camp for youth ages six to 12 years old. The APDS Youth for the Future of Franklin County Program is designed to meet the needs of the 16 to 21 year old youth and the business community, i.e. workforce development, by providing programs to measurably increase participants academic basic skills level one or more educational functioning levels by participants’ completion of their first year in a two-year program. Summer employment and mentoring are components of ‘Youth for the Future of Franklin County’ and is funded by Central Ohio Workforce Investment Corporation (COWIC).
Collective Action for Youth and Neighborhood Development (CAYND) is a department of APDS that is a vital component of Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman’s Comprehensive Crime Reduction Initiative. CAYND is an intervention strategy of The Neighborhood Safety Working Group. CAYND’s role is to facilitate a collective of over 30 agencies to reduce gang violence by providing comprehensive prevention and intervention social services in targeted communities. Crime has been reduced in the targeted area. An Adult Basic Learning Education (GED) class has been established at APDS by the Columbus City Schools. A Citizen Circle to support recently released ex-offenders has been established at APDS in partnership with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. A community garden called the “Garden of CAYNDness” was established as part of CAYND’s community beautification project.
APDS programs are designed to empower individuals, families, and communities to overcome the impact of alcohol and illegal drug use, family violence, low self-esteem, and inadequate preparation to lead successful lives. Our customers who we support today and those who will need our help in the future are counting on us to help them make the transition from dependency to self-reliance.
